The East Somerset Railway has published its latest update on the restoration of Great Western Railway 5101 Class No.4110, with a key milestone achieved.
The rear coal bunker has been completely restored. Much work has gone into assessing the existing bunker, then carrying out repairs and replacements where necessary.
The team has also applied primer and the first couple layers of green painting, followed by reattaching the bunker back to the locomotive’s frame.
Work is now progressing on building new side tanks, with the baffle plates for one side ready for riveting.

Meanwhile, work has progressed on the boiler, with cutting out wasted sections of steel plate and forming new replacement pieces. This has involved heating up and bending a section.
With the foundation ring removed from the bottom of the firebox, work can begin on further disassembly and assessing.
