Two of the biggest names for Mainline Steam in the UK will haul a series of special trains in 2021, and booking is now open to secure your place on these trains through the A1 steam website.

Tornado and Flying Scotsman are two of the most famous locomotives in the world, Tornado is now 12 years old, whilst Flying Scotsman is nearing its 100th birthday.

However, one thing that hasn’t happened in 12 years is Tornado and Flying Scotsman working together on the mainline. In September 2021, the two LNER designed locomotives, both in BR Green, will take passengers on a scenic journey over the Settle and Carlisle line.

Two trains will run on Thursday the 16th of September 2021. The first will depart from Peterborough, Newark, Doncaster and York, where Flying Scotsman will attach to the train. Flying Scotsman will then head via Leeds, Skipton, Hellifield and Ribblehead to Carlisle. The return journey back to Peterborough will be hauled by Tornado.

Also on Thursday 16th September 2021, the second train will depart Tamworth, Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe, Wigan and Preston (where Tornado will join the train). Tornado will haul the train to Carlisle via Blackburn and Hellifield. The return journey will see Flying Scotsman haul the train to Preston.

Once again, two trains will run on the 18th of September 2021. The first will see Tornado depart from Middlesborough, Yarm, Thirsk, York and Leeds, and will head through Skipton and Hellifeld before heading to Carlisle (Tornado will haul this leg throughout). The return journey will be hauled by Flying Scotsman as far as York.

The return journey will see Tornado haul the train back to Preston before electric traction back to Birmingham.
