Saphos Trains has announced that there will be a locomotive change for this weekends tour.

70000 Britannia has not passed her Fitness To Run exam for tomorrows ECS move to Bristol.

This now means that 34046 Braunton will be standing in for the Britannia instead.

34046 has been in the guise of 34052 ‘Lord Dowding’ for the last four years and is currently undergoing the process of changing back to 34036 Braunton. The work for isn’t yet complete and still needs a full repaint and lining.

This is a rare sight to see a steam locomotive on the mainline in ex-works condition.

Braunton is currently making her way to Bristol tomorrow with her stock. Here is the timings:

Have fun if you are seeing her today!

I’m so sorry that 21C152/34052 ‘LORD DOWDING’ will no longer be seen by the young generation, who will not realise that their freedom is in greater part due to the meticulous planning by Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, who in July 1936 setup the new RAF Fighter Command that was to protect the British Isles from invasion by Natzi Germany.

I was with Lord Dowding on that hot September morning on platform 11 at Waterloo Station in 1946, whe he named the first two B of B class locomotives.

Hugh Dowding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Dowding was responsible for the air defence of Great Britain as C-in-C Fighter Command that turned back Hitler’s invasion plans during the 1940 Battle of Britain.

    1. Hi Max,

Thanks for the extra information on the history.

There is potential that 34046 gets renumbered again, or another locomotive of the same type.

      Regards
