The East Lancashire Railway has announced that steam locomotive No.6233 Duchess of Sutherland will be visiting the line for their Autumn Steam Gala.

The LMS Princess Coronation locomotive will be visiting from the 19th October until the 21st October 2018.

The locomotives visiting is thanks to the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust (PRCLT).

6233 Duchess of Sutherland is visiting subject to a final gauging confirmation and completion of final repairs.

A brief history of 6233 Duchess of Sutherland

No. (4)6233 Duchess of Sutherland is an LMS Coronation Class type of steam locomotive as was built in 1938 at Crewe Works. The locomotive worked ‘The Royal Scot’ and ‘The Mid-Day Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow Central as well as trains to Liverpool.

The locomotive worked all the way up to 1964 when it was withdrawn by British Railways, where the locomotive was sold to a Butlins Camp in Scotland. In 1996, the locomotive was acquired by The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust and returned to steam in 2001 and has since been a regular sight on the mainline.

The Autumn Steam Gala

The weekend will be full of steam trains thanks to visiting locomotives and the home fleet of locomotives. An intensive timetable will be in operation throughout the weekend.
