Part of the Yorkshires Magnificent Journey Appeal, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has completed its £4 million carriage stable which was a major part of the £10 million project.
The carriage stable is a five track, single storey carriage shed with a cantilevered roof and can house up to 40 of the railways heritage carriages which means that servicing and cleaning tasks can be performed undercover.
The new facility is located at Pickering and is part of the Yorkshires Magnificent Journey Appeal which is designed to transform the railway and assure its future.
The appeal is funded by grants from the European Union, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Department of Environment Farming and Rural Affairs, the Local Enterprise Partnership and also from donations from supporters and charity members.
The carriage stable is one of the six planned projects, which also include a new education coach at Goathland, which provides a key objective to improve interpretation and education facilities on the railway.
The coach has recently been fully refurbished and will breathe life into the story of the railways through the people who worked on it. The education coach is expected to be finished and in action by April 2022.
Other projects within the appeal include the conversion of four carriages to provide accessible seating for wheelchair users and accessible toilets on every train.
During February 2022 the Yorkshires Magnificent Journey funding will also mean that the critical renewal and reconstruction of Bridges 24 and 25 at Goathland Station will begin, this project is vital to the ongoing operation of the railway.
John Bailey, NYMR Trust Chairman, said: “Fifty years ago our founders had the vision and determination to re-open the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Today we face challenges of a similar magnitude. We share their vision and determination, manifest through these projects that make up Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey. They mean that 50 years hence, people will still be learning from and enjoying the experience of steam across the Moors.”
