Recent overhaul update on steam locomotive 4930 Hagley Hall

A few weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown began, Leaky Finders took a trip to the Severn Valley Railway to carry out overhaul work on the steam locomotive, Great Western Railway 4900 ‘Hall’ Class No.4930 “Hagley Hall”.

Following the fitting of the new cylinders, this allowed Leaky Finders to machine the horns on 4930.

After setting up the optical alignment equipment, used for highly accurate measurement reading of the horns in relation to the cylinder’s certain line to be taken, the team could then calculate the amount of machining required for each of the six pairs of horns and begin work.

After polishing and last measurement checks, showing the horns are within .001” parallel, the team had completed their fantastic work, putting “Hagley Hall” one step closer to returning to steam.

The next stage of 4930’s overhaul will see the axleboxes machined to fit the horns, allowing the frame to be lifted back onto the coupled wheels, with this job planned to take place later on this year.
