Glasgow road to be closed as railway bridge works take place

Network Rail has confirmed the road closure of Nitshill Road, south of Glasgow. The road will close overnight on eight Saturdays while engineers carry out work to repair and strengthen the railway bridge over the A726.

The bridge, at Nitshill station, is part of a programme of maintenance on structures to extend their lifespan and keep the railway safe.

The work is expected to cost around £1m to protect the bridge.

Work on the bridge includes improving the drainage and clearing vegetation, strengthening girders, repairing masonry, blast cleaning and repairing the metalwork, applying corrosion protection and painting.

To deliver this work, the road needs to close overnight each Saturday night from February 22. The road closure enables engineers to put up scaffolding. Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout the project.

Additionally, traffic management will be in place from February 22 until April 13, which will reduce the road to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights.

Network Rail has worked with Glasgow City Council to put an ‘all vehicle’ diversion in place.

Work will begin at Nitshill Road on Monday, February 10 and will take place both day and night-time until Friday, May 1.

Day shift is Mon – Fri 7 am – 5 pm
Night shift working is Saturday 10 pm – 8 am & Sun – Thurs 10 pm – 7 am
A single lane closure controlled by traffic lights will be in place from February 22 until April 11
Full road closures will be in place overnight Saturday into Sunday from February 22 until April 13

What did the officials say?

Allison Flanagan, Network Rail project manager, said:

“We know that Nitshill Road is a busy and important route for local traffic and we do not take the decision to request its closure lightly.

“We understand the impact that this potentially will have for both road users and those communities adjacent to the bridge works. However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridge.

“We will deliver the work in just 12 weeks which is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community.”
