It has been confirmed that Ex-LNER ‘A4’ No. 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ has unfortunately failed once again.

The locomotive is currently parked in Kings Langley Loop, where it has been since 15:30 this afternoon.

The A4 has unfortunately failed with a recurrence of the tender axlebox problem which has caused two other failures in the past two weeks.

60009 will be moving soon from Kings Langley to Watford Yard.

This movement will allow the locomotive, tender and support coach to be split and be transported by road back to Bury in the next few days.

Nothing else has been said – apart from that the tour tomorrow will be diesel hauled.

We will update you as soon as we know anything.

  1. Yet another loco failure….reputations are beginning to tarnish, ending the ‘special’ day for many behind a 57 or a 66 devalues the experience. Are we pushing our heritage steam locos too hard?

  2. 60009 Union of South Africa is looking a little sorry sitting in Watford Junction on the sidings. Do hope the repairs are successful this time.
Unfortunately I’m unable to share the photo I have here.

And agree with Jock’s sentiment – are we pushing our heritage loco’s too hard?

  3. Yesterday, the 13th December, I passed 60009 on a low loader traveling along the A50 just south of Derby heading towards Stoke. Destination possibly Bury?
