Network Rail has announced that they have successfully reinstalled the footbridge linking platforms six and nine at Stirling station this bank holiday weekend.
The work was carried out across Saturday and Sunday and saw a team of engineers working around the clock to lift the 28-tonne footbridge into place using a 750-tonne crane.
When the work is complete, the footbridge will become part of a fully accessible structure with the installation of a new lift on platform nine to provide step-free access to all platforms within the station.
Delivering step-free access to platforms six and nine is part of an overall package of work at Stirling station which includes:
- Refurbishing and raising the footbridge for overhead wires to be installed
- Alterations to the roof canopy
- Installation of a lift on platform nine to provide step-free access
- Reconstruction of the staircase on platform nine
- Alterations to the internal landing areas between the footbridge and existing lift on platform three.
What did the officials say?
Kenny MacDonald, Network Rail‘s programme manager for the Stirling station work, said:
“It is incredibly exciting to see the refurbished footbridge being lifted into place.
“The bridge lift went very well with the team working extremely hard over the weekend to complete the installation. We also thank local residents for their patience and cooperation while this activity was underway. Now that the installation of the footbridge is complete, the team will be working towards completing the remaining elements of the structure to make Stirling station fully accessible.”

The overhead line masts have been painted Green. Thats something special. Can overhead masts be painted in different colours at stations to make it more attractive.
A new footbridge at Stirling is an improvement to the station. As the electrification reached Stirling, Alloa and Dunblane and with Class 385s now operating to these towns to & from Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queens Street.
