A position has become available for another Engineering Technician (Steam Locomotive and Coach Fitter) with the .

The Trust is well known for building brand new full-size steam locomotives from scratch and are looking for somebody to join their team as an Engineering Technician.

The important position will require the applicant to assist with delivering operational and planned maintenance, along with repair work on new build locomotive Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado, and Mk 1 support coaches BCK 21249 and BSK 35457.

The position will include work on both mainline and preserved railways, and will also include construction work and consequent planned maintenance of Gresley Class P2 2007 Prince of Wales which is currently being built by the Trust. The position requires a good knowledge of steam locomotive maintenance and repair, with experience of mainline steam locomotive operation being an advantage.

The role will also include engineering activity as part of scheduled and planned maintenance work, and will also incorporate basic admin and IT skills. The post will be part of a team which is based in where the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has its dedicated workshop which is currently developing a purpose-built maintenance and construction facility on a new site. The position will be focused on the maintenance and operation of Tornado whether that be from mainline depots or heritage sites around the UK. There will be a requirement for considerable travel with time away from home including weekends.

Essential skills for the role include basic knowledge of the rail environment including the need for safety, good mechanical and electrical skills with experience of routine boiler maintenance and steam locomotive fittings and previous experience of working in a safety-critical environment.

The position needs someone who can work as part of a team is meticulous, reliable, flexible and hard working. Communication skills are key both in person and in written forms with good basic IT skills and experience with MS Office toolset.

Desirable skills for the role include a requirement to be able to demonstrate competence via an NVQ in Rail Engineering, Traction and Rolling Stock Level 2 or relevant experience, other formal qualifications within this area are desirable but not essential. Current footplate competence as a fireman, cleaner or footplate trainee and also being a current Sentinel Cardholder or TOC PTS. The candidate must also meet the minimum criteria of an NR medical and be able to achieve a full PTS during the initial probation period. Also being willing and able to drive.

The salary for the position with be negotiated based on skill level and experience.
