72010 Hengist: Steam locomotive takes shape in Sheffield as new £22,000 appeal is launched

The Standard Steam Locomotive Company, who are building 72010 ‘Hengist', has launched an appeal to raise funds needed to complete the construction of the front bogie for the locomotive.

2020 has recently seen the assembly of the completed elements for Hengist to provide a glimpse of what the locomotive might look like once complete.

The charity has also confirmed that David Buck has joined the charity as a new patron.

As part of the next stage of work, however, the project team at CTL Seal in Sheffield are looking to complete the final phase of work on the front bogie.

This phase covers the construction of the suspension system and the spring cradle plates, spring brackets, leaf springs and lastly the construction of the remaining axle.

The project has therefore launched a £22,000 appeal to help complete the work.

Allan Jones, Chairman of THE ‘CLAN' PROJECT, said: “We're delighted with the recent progress that we've made despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. However, we now need your help so that we can maintain this going into 2021, which promises to be the most significant year for the project so far.

“We appreciate this is a difficult time for many people, but if you are keen to see a ‘Clan' in action again and can spare a small amount for a donation, it would be much appreciated.”

  • its ok making new steam locos but when tyneside council object to a new coal mine that could provide coal to all our steam lines then whats the point. And when diesel and petrol is banned what about old diesel trains and buses then..Only the Trollybuses will survice at Sandtoft and Carlton Coalville,Will these new locos ever steam then

    • Hopefully: with Australian, Colombian or (at the moment ‘and’) Russian coal. We’re already importing thousands of tonnes each year for the industries that need it.
