As announced earlier this year, the work at railway station has been progressing well over the last few weekends.

Last weekend a new 4m-tall twin-track stanchion was installed which will be used for new overline line requirement, the previous 2 weekends have seen new platform sections laid.

The works are due to be completed in December and are being carried out by and contactor AmcoGiffen.

The project work at Milngavie railway station will see the platforms being increased from 141m to 205m, along with amendments to the track and signalling at the station.

Although longer trains will not be calling at the station, by lengthening the platforms, there will be the opportunity to stable trains at the station giving more options for arrivals and departures.

Kevin McClelland, Network Rail route delivery director for capital delivery, said: “Our team has been working hard to deliver this important part of the platform extension project as quickly as possible and with a minimum of disruption for our customers.

“We understand the inconvenience this work may cause to some passengers and also to our lineside neighbours living closest to the station, and I would like to thank them for their cooperation and patience while we deliver this £5m investment in their station.”

David Simpson, ScotRail operations director, said: “When complete, the extension of the platforms will help deliver greater resilience on a significant route on central Scotland's railway and in doing so, provide improvements in the service we can offer to passengers.

“Everyone on Scotland's Railway is working hard to keep the network running during this difficult time for the country and to continually improve the service we offer by investing to improve punctuality and reduce delays.”

  • I agree. Network Rail should continue on the overhead wire replacements. But this is wonderful to see what is happening at Milnagvie 6 miles from Central Glasgow.

  • Perhaps Network Rail should also replace ageing overhead wires on the c2c line between West Ham/Bromley-By-Bow-Fenchurch Street in East London. And to finish off replacing ageing overhead wires at Maryland, Stratford, Prittlewell and Southend Victoria. And to replace the ageing overhead wires on the Ashburys-Gosslop/Hatfield lines in Greater Manchester.
