Network Rail will begin work on Milngavie to extend platforms to deliver better flexibility of trains on the line.
The project is worth £5m, both platforms at the station will be extended to reintroduce 39m of the unused platform.
The work will also require the repositioning of signalling and overhead wire equipment to accommodate the new platform lengths.
Milngavie will remain open throughout the work, and the majority of train services will operate as usual. There will be some periods of weekend work in late autumn when the line will close so that the work can be completed safely.
To allow a compound to be set up to support the work, 32 car parking spaces will be out of use during the work.
The platform work is not to allow longer trains to operate from Milngavie, but by adding additional length to platforms, it allows the stabling of trains, and allow some trains to have more time before arriving and departing.
Kevin McClelland, Network Rail route delivery director for capital delivery, said: “The investment we are making is key to improving the resilience and reliability of a significant route on central Scotland's railway and in doing so, will deliver improvements in the service we offer to passengers. This programme of activity will involve engineers working day and night. We appreciate the impact this may have at times on those living closest to the station and thank them for their patience while we carry out this important work. We will deliver the project as quickly and efficiently as possible and keep disruption to a minimum for both those who use the station and the nearby residents.”
Work at the station will be carried out following government guidance during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The extended platforms will be commissioned for the December 2020 timetable change.
