Following the recent update from the Wednesday Gang, which can be found here, an update from the Tuesday Gang’s work at the Mid Hants Railway on Tuesday 10th of March has been released.
Southern Railway V ‘School’ Class No.30925 “Cheltenham”
Majority of the team’s work on Tuesday 10th saw them helping repair and prepare “Cheltenham” for its next duties.
Firstly, they replaced a couple of firebars in the firebox. Next, some members assisted in moving 30925 to the pit road for raking the ashpan out.
The rest of the group started to clean out the sandboxes located in the tender. Damp sand clogs up the pipes, blocking them. The tender’s sandboxes provide sand when running tender first.
The next task was to turn attention to the centre cylinder. When last in service, it was noted that a blowing would need inspecting, which was coming from piston rod gland packings. Once removed, the team could start lapping the gland segments. The next stage of repairs will see the segments machined.
The last job of the day was to clean the pit, ready for London, Midland and Scottish Railway Ivatt Class 2 Tank No.41312 to be cleaned of ash after a freight photo charter.
