Two South Wales stations have been taken under the collective wings of a team of Soroptimists.
Barry and District Soroptimists have set to improve the environment at both Barry Town and Barry Island stations. They have taken up the challenge initiated by Transport for Wales for local people and organisations to adopt stations in their own areas.
Since beginning work at the two stations, and with the support of Transport for Wales, Soroptimist members have transformed planters with plants which are both pollinator friendly and sustainable.
Keen gardeners in the group have been watering plants regularly and dead-heading in order to prolong the flowering season. A free box exchange has been set up near the ticket office area where travellers can help themselves to one or two books to read on their journeys. Books can either be returned or replaced at a later date.
Wellbeing centres have been installed in the ladies' toilets where free Period Dignity sanitary products are available. The products have been donated by Vale of Glamorgan County Council in support of the project.
Soroptimist International is a world-wide voluntary organisation, with 72,000 members in 121 countries. Members set out to inspire action and transform the lives of women and girls.
Pat Hollis, a Soroptimist member, said: “We hope that by enhancing the facilities and appearance of both stations, it will make it a more attractive travelling experience for members of the public using Transport For Wales in Barry. Details of all our activities and plans for the future can be found on our noticeboard at Barry Town station.”
Community Rail Manager for Transport for Wales, Geraint Morgan, added: “Stations are often an important gateway to cities, towns and villages across the network and first impressions count. The volunteers' support in delivering these initial initiatives is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing this positive partnership with further enhancements.”
