The Class G5 Locomotive Company has launched the ’10 Gallon Fund’ to raise the money to build its new-build locomotive’s two side water tanks.

The Company was founded by a group of Northern railway enthusiasts, and is working to recreate a full-size prototypical North Eastern Railway Class O (LNER Class G5) 0 – 4 – 4 Passenger Tank Locomotive. Once built, the locomotive will be hired out to heritage railways and may later be used on the main line.

One hundred and ten G5s were built between 1894 and 1910, in seven batches. They were the standard NER tank engine until larger classes superceded them from 1907.

The loco’s water capacity is 1360 gallons. So the company is suggesting that donors pay for ten gallons each, by making a contribution of £180 either as a one-off payment or in instalments through a standing order. Contributors may give the money either as a donation or to buy shares in the company (with 30% tax relief to UK tax payers).
