Customers are being advised to check their travel plans ahead of making a journey on the London Underground, as it is set to be affected by six days of strike action starting on Sunday the 23rd of July.
The industrial action by RMT, ASLEF and Unite unions is set to bring substantial disruption to the Tube network should it go ahead with different lines set to be impacted on different days.
Due to the strike action, it is expected that both the Elizabeth line and London Overground services will be busier than usual and may see queuing systems put in place, however, services will run as normal.
Docklands Light Railway and London Trams will also be operating as usual however the closure of Tube stations may mean that they cannot stop at all stations, which may include their usual destination. Buses are also anticipated to be busier than usual, however, will operate as normal.
The national rail network will also see industrial action take place on Thursday the 20th, Saturday the 22nd and Saturday the 29th of July. Glynn Barton, TfL's Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are disappointed that the RMT, ASLEF and Unite unions have announced strike action. We are continuing to talk with trade unions to discuss the issues and seek a resolution.”
“There are no current proposals to change pension arrangements. Although we are discussing with union colleagues,
a range of proposals to change how London Underground operates, no employee will lose their job or be asked to work additional hours.”
“We urge the trade unions to call off this action, but if it goes ahead, customers should check before they travel as there will be significant disruption on the Tube across the week.”
The action set to take place on the London Underground has come after Transport for London's pensions scheme was reviewed with no plans to change pension arrangements. Future proposals regarding pension arrangements would need the necessary consultation alongside a great deal of extra work.
Travel advice for Sunday the 23rd to Saturday the 29th of July:
Sunday the 23rd to Monday the 24th of July:
- Sunday the 23rd of July will see London Underground services close early, with customers advised to finish their journeys by 19:00
- Monday the 24th of July will see services return to a good level by late-morning
Tuesday the 25th and Thursday the 27th of July:
- Little to no service is expected across the London Underground
Wednesday the 26th and Friday 28th July:
- No services are expected across London Underground, including the Night Tube
Saturday the 29th of July:
- Tube services will begin later than usual, with a good level of service expected by midday
No other Transport for London services will be affected by the strike action, however, some Docklands Light Railway, London Overground including night services and Elizabeth Line services may be impacted due to station closures of stations which serve London Underground lines.
Customers planning to travel on days impacted by a limited tube service should be aware that services which are running will be extremely busy and may face delays. The industrial action will also mean that other Transport for London services and roads are likely to be extremely busy. Advice is given to customers travelling through this period to check ahead of travelling, leaving plenty of extra time to complete journeys.
Further to the planned strike action, passengers using Bakerloo Line and London Overground are being advised of essential railway upgrade work, which will affect travel during the school summer holidays. The work will get underway on Sunday the 23rd of July and will be ongoing, including Friday the 25th of August and will see Network Rail undertake major improvements over a 20-mile stretch of railway in North London. The work will impact the Bakerloo line between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone stations and also London Overground between Euston and Watford Junction stations.
