Trap and drag accidents investigated at two London Underground stations

Rail Accident Investigation Branch is investigating two trap and drag incidents which took place earlier this year at Archway and Chalk Farm Underground Stations.

The first incident took place on the 18th of February 2023 at approximately 15.50 a passenger's coat was trapped in the train doors of a northbound service at Archway station.

The incident saw the train depart, and the passenger dragged for around two metres before their coat was freed from the door.

Both the passenger and their companion fell whilst the train moved away, sustaining a serious injury. The train travelled for approximately 20 metres before it stopped.

The second incident took place on the 20th of April 2023 at approximately 23.00 at Chalk Farm station when once again, a passenger's coat became trapped in the doors of a southbound Northern Line Train.

The passenger was dragged for a little under 20 metres before their coat became free of the doors. During the incident, the passenger fell onto the platform and sustained minor injuries.

The train did not stop during the incident and carried on with its journey.

The investigation by Rail Accident Investigation Branch will seek to discover the sequence of events leading to the accidents as well as considering the following:

  • The actions of those involved and anything which may have influenced them
  • The arrangements in place to manage and control the risks associated with passengers boarding and alighting from trains on the
  • London Underground's post-incident management of platform-train interface accidents and any underlying management factors
