DB Cargo UK is a British rail freight operator that moves freight across England Scotland and Wales and as half term approaches are taking the opportunity to remind children of the dreadful consequences of trespassing on sites, sidings or the main line network which can result in life-changing injuries or death.
The rail operator's Head of Safety, Marc Binney, has reported that despite a good number of warnings, sadly, trespass continues.
Marc also said: “Our sites and depots support the UK's busy railway network. Schoolchildren, or any member of the public for that matter, put themselves in serious danger if they trespass on railway sites,” said Marc.
“They are potentially very dangerous places for people who are unfamiliar with them and have no safety training. There are frequent train movements, high-voltage electric cables and other machinery that all present a significant risk to trespassers.”
With depots and terminals throughout the UK, DB Cargo UK is spending substantial amounts in order to make sure that sites are fenced with on-site security and safety signage clearly visible in order to put off the illegal activity.
Rail colleagues also work hard making ongoing checks to make sure that sites are secure and should trespass or evidence of trespass be found that immediate action is taken.
Marc went on to say: “The industry invests a significant amount of time and money every year in trying to educate the public, in particular young people, about the risks they expose themselves to if they try and access our sites and the network. The railway is no place for children to play”
