Network Rail has revealed that plans are progressing well to make the station accessible with a completion date set for the half of 2024.
The provision of broader access and inclusion for Britains railway is a huge priority and the Department for Transport's Access for All programme aims to deliver this by creating step-free, accessible routes for hundreds of stations across the country.
Alfreton station is now ready for its accessibility upgrades and will see two new lifts installed on its present bridge which will also be fully refurbished. The improvements will also see better lighting installed as part of the project.
The project can now move forward following the completion of a coal mining report and a bridge inspection. Further work has also seen topographical, lighting, cable, ecological and drainage surveys carried out.
Gavin Crook, Principal Programme Sponsor, said: “We're moving forward with this project and are encouraged by the bridge inspection and assessment report which shows that the existing bridge can be used as proposed.
“Contractors have been engaged to develop the final design and the option chosen will deliver value for money and a short construction time.”
Work will get underway on the project during autumn 2023 and completion is expected from spring to early summer 2024.
Alfreton station with step free access is a good idea. Wish that Greater Anglia would of done the same with making stations step-free including at Prittlewell, Rochford, Hockley, Rayleigh, Wickford, Ingatestone, Hatfield Peveral, Marks Tey and other stations on the Greater Anglia network that aren’t step-free accessible to be upgraded to step-free station.
