St. Alban's City is Thameslink's busiest railway station north of London, and almost 4 million journeys are made to, from, or through the station every year. The multi-million-pound investment in adding a second footbridge to the station will make it easier for passengers to switch platforms, especially during busy times.

Gary Walsh, East Midlands Route Director for Network Rail said: “At such a busy station, this brand-new footbridge will create much-needed space and help more passengers enjoy travelling by train.

“Our industry partners, passengers, and stakeholders have been central to delivering this important project and I'm grateful for their support.”

Thameslink and Great Northern Managing Director Tom Moran said: “We've transformed St Albans station over the last few years to improve the experience for our passengers.

“We now have new retail stores, improved toilets, additional cycle facilities with increased security, and a wider entrance to help passenger flows through the Ridgmont Road entrance.

“This second footbridge is yet another substantial improvement that will really help commuters by making it quicker and easier to get from one side of the station to the other – particularly from the central ‘island' platform.”

  • Very nice improvement Govia Thameslink Railway. St. Albans City could have an extra platform including a new platform for Thameslink trains to terminate at St. Albans City and operating to Wimbledon/Sutton (Loop) and Rainham (Kent) via Loughborough Junction.
