East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced that it is to invest more than £370,000 in facilities for cyclists at stations on its network.
The two types of facilities being installed are shelters (pictured) and hoops.
Shelters will be undercover, and will incorporate cycle racks and energy efficient LED lighting, with some being monitored by CCTV. After feedback from local passengers, and to fit in with the stations' environments, the shelters are to be constructed from sustainable resources, including dagger boards.
EMR points out that it considered the use of renewable and finite resources in considering the shelter's components, and paid particular to the use of materials that could be reused or recycled and have a low end-of-life impact.
Cycle hoops are a more basic facility, enabling rail users to lock their bicycles at the station.
In Nottinghamshire, Rolleston station will have both a shelter and hoops installed, while Carlton, Newstead, Fiskerton and Thurgarton stations will have hoops.
The following stations in Lincolnshire will all have hoops fitted: Havenhouse; Rauceby; Ulceby; Swineshead; Thorton Abbey; Goxhill; Great Coates; and Boston, which will also have a shelter installed.
The stations at Long Eaton in Derbyshire and Uttoxeter in Staffordshire will have both a shelter and hoops installed. In Cheshire, Alsager station will have hoops.
Mark Lambert, Head of Infrastructure and Property at East Midlands Railway, said: “Cycling to your nearest station to catch a train to work, school or for a leisure trip is a great way to keep healthy and reduce emissions.
“This investment shows our ongoing commitment to improving facilities for our regional customers and we hope their installation will encourage more people to choose sustainable travel as part of their everyday journey.”
