A host of iconic Land Rovers will be on display at Amberley Museum near Arundel in West Sussex on Sunday, 9th October when the museum hosts its annual Land Rover Day.
The event, which has been running at the museum since 2016, provides an opportunity for visitors to view and photograph over 60 Land Rovers dating from 1949 onwards, including classics, specials, service, military, and modern models. They will also be able to find out about the early development of the vehicles and meet their owners who are keen to share their enthusiasm and stories.
Many vehicles that will be on display will have interesting histories, and visitors will learn how they have survived, and the lengths to which their owners have gone to maintaining them over the years.
Although Land Rover Day is the focus, there are plenty of other attractions at the museum to keep visitors occupied. Located in the heart of the South Downs National Park, there are over 20 permanent and important transport-related collections, including a nineteenth-century wheelwright's shop, a replica 1920s bus garage, village garage, cycle workshop, and a period fire station.
A narrow-gauge railway will be providing free train rides all day pulled by steam locomotive Peter, whilst vintage buses will be in use to transport visitors around the site. Peter is an 0-4-0 saddle tank built by William Bagnall of Stafford in 1918 was originally constructed to 3ft gauge and was purchased by the Ministry of Munitions for War in December of that year and delivered to the Canadian Forestry Corps at Longtown in Cumberland. After the war, Peter was converted to 2ft gauge, and following several changes of ownership was transferred to the care of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society, who passed it on to the museum in 1983.
