During the weekend 11th/12th June, 135 participants successfully completed the Porterbrook Three Peaks Challenge by Rail, raising £180k for the Railway Children charity.
The Three Peaks Challenge involved climbing the three highest peaks of Wales (Snowdon), England (Scafell Pike), and Scotland (Ben Nevis), within a set time. The total walking distance was 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent was 3064 metres (10,052ft).
This is the third year that Porterbrook has sponsored the challenge, which is organised by the charity, which provides protection and opportunities for vulnerable children who are alone or at risk on the streets. This year 35 teams, including eight Porterbrook employees, braved extremely windy conditions to climb Snowdon, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis in under 48 hours.
Some people estimate this is probably the equivalent of three half-marathons on quite difficult terrain, added to which there is little prospect of much sleep during the event. The teams were provided with transportation to the mountains and by train between the mountains. They were also supplied with food and drink on the train, but had to supply their own hiking equipment, sleeping bags/pillows.
A plentiful supply of water was on hand during the mountain climbs as well as lots of snacks. First aiders were available to help with any minor problems, as well as doctors on board the train for the more serious ailments. Entrants could also take advantage of masseuses for their physical and mental well-being who provided, for a small charge, sports massages.
The first night was spent climbing Snowdon, whilst the second night was spent sitting up on the train. Participants had to grab a few hours' sleep whenever they could.
At Fort William, the teams were met by Porterbrook's Chief Investment Officer, Stefan Rose, who gave out medals on the train to all who took part in the challenge.
