The London Transport Museum is welcoming families to think about climate change this summer with its new interactive ‘Green Journey' installation
The interactive ‘Green Journey' installation is hoped to get families thinking about transport's role in making a sustainable city and how everyone can play a part in making a green future a reality.
The Museum will feature a green-themed trail around its galleries alongside creative workshops which will run right through the holidays and are aimed at supporting young visitors in learning more about climate change in a fun, family-friendly way.
Families visiting The Green Hourney Installation can visit four themed, hands-on areas which will feature subjects such as global warming and how it affects London, the solutions big businesses have created so far which are already in action such as Transport for London's (TfL) hydrogen buses alongside new green jobs and the people behind them. The installation will also give families the chance to find out what small changes they can make at home to become more eco-friendly.
Family workshops which are based on the themes featured in Green Journey will also take place on selected dates throughout the holidays with five workshops running on each day which are suitable for children aged 8 to 14 years and are as follows:
- Climate Calling: will run on the 23rd, 26th, 28th and 30th of July and the 2nd and 4th of August. This workshop will offer families the chance to learn how climate change affects the city and the role of transport in forming a solution from TfL's new hydrogen buses which are helping make London's air cleaner, to active travel choices which can be made when making journeys. Children get the chance to make their own Climate Calling board game inspired by the workshop.
- Future Innovators: will run on the 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 16th and 19th of August. This workshop will look at what life in the city could look like in the future? What jobs will still exist and what skills are needed. Families can also hear about real-life climate change innovators and look into the skills needed to help tackle climate change in the future. Children can let their imaginations go wild and enjoy making their own climate change superhero.
- Activate: will run on the 20th, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 30th of August and the 1st of September. This workshop will see families learn that everyone has a role to play in tackling climate change and the small things that people can do in order to support making London greener. Families get to make their own set of Family Action Cards to inspire them.
London Transport Museums summer activities are part of its 18-month Climate Crossroads programme which is supported by Mastercard, Mott MacDonald, Cubic Transportation Systems and Sopra Steria. The programme hopes to provide experiences which will get people thinking about the future of the city, how it could look and how the great engineering and ingenuity of London's past can inspire, alongside the exploration of innovation, skills and jobs which will be required to create a sustainable future.
London Transport Museum will also host Mastercard's Girls4Tech STEM workshops on the 3rd and 4th of August in the main museum gallery. The workshops are drop-in sessions on Cryptology and Big Data and will see these subjects learnt through fun and problem-solving games. The Girls4Tech workshops will be run by Mastercard staff members and are aimed at trying to inspire the next generation to follow a STEM career.
The Museum also offers families the chance to see real buses, trams and Tube trains from 200 years of London's transport history. In the Future Engineers gallery, families can learn how to drive a modern-day Elizabeth line train or climb on board a fleet of mini vehicles in the All Aboard play zone.
Canteen which is the Museums cafe run by popular eatery Benugo is open for visitors between 11am and 3pm for tasty treats and bites to eat. The Museums shop also offers visitors the chance to buy transport-inspired toys, gifts, homeware, poster artwork and games.
London Transport Museum uses timed tickets which can be booked online in advance. Adult tickets cost £21 and can be used for free return day-time entry throughout the year and kids go free!
