Working with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, Northerns new priority seating card hopes to make travel easier for those with visible or non-visible disabilities.

The new card is free and is aimed at people with a range of conditions that make it hard for them to stand.

The card hopes to bring people the confidence to ask passengers to give up a priority seat and also provide fellow passengers the chance to offer their seat.

The card has been produced by those who created the Sunflower Lanyard and is easily recognisable as a disability aid, the card also gives the wearer space to personalise the reverse side.

Mark Powles, Commercial and Customer Director at , said:

“We are proud to be working with Hidden Disabilities to support those in our communities

to use our trains and stations with confidence.

“A small act by fellow travellers offering up their seat has an immediate effect but also gives a confidence boost that has a lasting impact.

“We want to make our trains – and our wider network – as accessible as possible, and this scheme is the next step in the journey to deliver a Northern that works for everyone and makes a positive difference.”

Northern launched the initiative on International Day of People with Disabilities with an event held at Manchester Victoria on the 3rd of December.

The launch also saw Northern's dedicated team demonstrate a new virtual reality application which is currently in the test stages and, once finalised, will allow passengers to check out their journey and support they might need from their own home. The innovative technology will provide the user with the chance to experience trains, stations and also allow interaction with both station and on-board staff in realistic simulated surroundings.
