Work undertaken by to upgrade the signalling system and track at South is now complete.

The major project took place between Friday the 22nd and Sunday the 31st of October and has seen the Bridlington South signal box' 65 lever frame updated to a modern control panel.

Signalling systems are a vital part of the rail network, letting train drivers know if it is safe to proceed and which route their train will take.

They also keep trains a safe distance apart and assist in reducing delays.

The work will bring a more up to date and reliable railway for East Yorkshires passengers and has even managed to leave the well-loved lever frame in place.

The iconic signal box levers are now no longer used, but alteration to the plan of work has meant they have been able to be left in place.

The nine-day project saw the installation of the new control panel installed successfully and the old mechanical signals located next to the track replaced with brand new colour light versions.

Work was also carried out to renew 1.2km of track, making the most of the 9-day closure and removing the need for future disruption.

As planned, trains returned back to normal services on Monday the 1st of November.

Chris Gee, Operations Director for Network Rail's North and East route, said:

“After the signal box and lever frame were listed just before this vital work started, we had to make some last-minute changes to the planned project. By relocating the new control panel within the signal box, we were able to bring a more modern, reliable railway for passengers, keep the much-loved equipment in place and make sure trains resumed on time.

“Buses have kept people moving between Driffield, Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough and I'd like to thank passengers, businesses and people in the community for their continued patience whilst this work was completed.”
