The Churchward County Trust has released their latest update on building their new steam engine, Great Western Railway (GWR) 3800 ‘Churchward County' Class No.3840 “County of Montgomery”.
Good progress is being made at Tyseley Locomotive Works, where the mainframe for “County of Montgomery” is based.
A trial fit of the new drag box to the mainframe has taken place to check how these components line up. The Trust opted for a fabricated drag box over a riveted built one, a decision made mainly on cost grounds.
Design work was carried out by Elliot Powick. The next stage will see the rear drag beam and two rubbing plates fitted.
Work on producing the cab, splashers and running plate for 3840 will hopefully begin later this year as the drawings for these components are almost finished.
The Trust aims to complete these parts while work progresses on the coupled wheelsets and before attention is turned to producing more components for the front end.
Fundraising towards the wheelsets has hit a key milestone with £30,000 now raised, leaving only £10,000 remaining before they are fully funded. More information on supporting the construction of the coupled wheelsets can be found here.
