The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has announced that they will be investigating an incident between a cyclist and tram on the Manchester Metrolink.
On the 1st September around 7.25pm a tram was travelling on the East Manchester tram line, between Audenshaw and Droylsden tram stops.
The trams struck and seriously injured a child cyclist at the junction of Droylsden Road and Kershaw Lane.
The cyclist was crossing Droylsden Road at a pedestrian crossing which is controlled by road traffic and pedestrian signal lights.
The RAIB will be looking to identify the sequence of events leading up to the accident and will consider:-
- The design and configuration of the crossing which the cyclist was using.
- How the design and operation of the crossing was risk assessed.
- The relevant legislation and industry guidance which deals with the design and configuration of pedestrian crossings where trams run ‘on-street'.
- Any relevant underlying factors.
The results of the investigation and any associated recommendations will be published in due course.
