Northern Belle has told RailAdvent that LNER A1 60163 Tornado will be deputising for 6201 Princess Elizabeth for the next two weeks at least as repairs are completed on the LMS Princess locomotive.

On Sunday 8th August, the loco will depart Glasgow Central at 10:06, the A1 locomotive will pass through Motherwell (10:27), Shieldmuir (10:29), Carstairs (10:47), Lockerbie (11:59) before arriving into Carlisle at 12:42.

After around 2 hours in Carlisle, the steam locomotive will depart for Hellifield, passing through Lazonby & Kirkoswald (15:07), Appleby (15:27), Kirkby Stephen (15:52), Ribblehead (16:16) and Hellifield Goods Loop at 16:35.

Here Tornado will be taken off and replaced by diesels, which will return to Glasgow via Clitheroe (17:38), Blackburn (17:56), Preston (18:10), Oxenholme Lake District (18:44), Carlisle (19:27), Motherwell (21:31) and Glasgow Central at 21:46.

A Northern Belle spokesman told RailAdvent: “Tornado is a magnificent railway engine. The first (mainline) steam locomotive built in Britain for 50 years – and the only one running currently capable of reaching 100mph.

“So we are sure that none of our passengers will be disappointed this weekend. Unfortunately, Lizzie blew her top the other week and has been temporarily shunted off into the sidings for repairs.

“But although the engine was built way back in 1933, she is certainly no old boiler and we are confident that Lizzie will be back on track pretty soon.”
