Families were invited by to a free rail safety event, which took place on Monday the 23rd of August at station.

Network Rail and British Transport Police ran a selection of activities that raised awareness and promoted railway safety.

The event was aimed at 8 to 13-year-olds who learnt about safety on the railways. The open day also aimed to encourage children and families back to using the railways following the lifting of coronavirus restrictions by the Government.

The open day also included a quiz about track safety and also a chance for children to learn how to purchase a ticket. The children also learnt how trains are dispatched from stations with a visit to the platform.

Andy Phillips, Network Rail's Reading station manager, said: “This initiative was introduced by our station colleagues to help instil confidence in people who have little experience of, or are nervous about, train travel. These trips are particularly well-suited to children leaving primary school or young secondary school pupils, who may be considering using the train in the future.”
