Today, 28th August, the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust has sent RailAdvent photos of the new temporary livery for LNER A4 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
This follows on from the news earlier this week that the A4 had a protective black layer to protect it from the elements whilst at York and also transportation to Crewe, where final overhaul work will take place.
A spokesperson for the SNGLT has confirmed that whilst a final move date hasn't been announced, it is expected that the move will take place in 2 to 3 weeks time.
This new LNER Wartime Black livery with 4498 on the cab side and LNER on the tender is only temporary and Sir Nigel Gresley will return to steam in BR Express Blue, as voted for by members.
It definitely is a striking livery for the A4, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust Chairman, Nigel Wilson, told RailAdvent “The movement from York to Crewe will be in two or three weeks time. The date is not set yet. We will confirm the plans to SNGLT members in due course.”

I have travelled from Pickering to Whitby many times hauled by a blue Sir Nigel and for me that is how it should be. Will never be as impressive in black.
When I first saw loco circa 1965 on Carlisle station waiting to take over The Waverley it was blue so I have always been partial to that .However I have to admit this format is sensational.
Just saw 5025 this morning so “clean” black can look great in any format and on any loco.
There’s something about the black that makes it look mean and aggressive, and gives it a real presence on the line, I really like it. Could you imagine it charging towards you at 75mph in all black, it certainly would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see.
Personally I prefer th black, it gives it a real presence (look at me) finish.

It was a LNER locomotive so should be in LNER colours. Why would ANYONE want to celebrate the awful monstrosity that was British Rail?
Love it in black also think a very light green would look very good
I used to see this loco in North London nearly every week as a kid in BR green, but the black livery looks superb, leave it in black.

It looks fantastic in black. Very impressive. I shall try to get to see it before it is moved. As a lad I saw it in action numerous times in Doncaster. It was in Brunswick green in those days, and I would like to see it in that livery again. I suspect there are very few people still around who saw it in blue. Great photo!

I always preferred the Brunswick green captis engines and climbed aboard when it was in a steamer sheds I can never remember this theme blue I’m sure it was I think we should get the world’s most famous steam engine on the rails again it’s not the flying Scotsman it’s Mallard in York railway museum I don’t live far from York so I will be going to see some Nigel gresley again with its new livery if it’s around thank you and good luck
I like it, wouldbe happy to see her run in this livery before returning to BR Ex Blue, Apple Green would be better!!

Glad to see it back looking ‘complete’ but not impressed with black livery. Had hoped it would be repainted into BR green, especially as ‘No.9’ has now retired. Maybe one day it will appear as I remember it, as green 60007…….?
