, who operate the Tyne & Wear Metro, have announced that family days out will be more affordable with free travel for children.

When accompanied by a fare paying adult, up to 3 children aged up to 11 can now travel free.

The offer is valid all day every day and also applies to the Shields Ferry.

First introduced for weekends as part of the 40th Metro anniversary celebrations, the offer has been extended permanently.

The adult must be 18 or older and be in possession of a valid ticket or Smartcard. Qualifying children do not need a ticket.

More details on the offer and which tickets are valid can be found here on the Nexus website.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “We are always looking at how to give our customers the best possible value for money, and offering free travel to children gives families a fantastic opportunity to revisit their favourite places or explore new ones in an extremely affordable way.

“It's been a difficult year for everyone, and the thought of some freedom and adventure is very appealing. We want to help families make the most of their time together and enjoy some fantastic attractions right on our doorstep for less with Metro.

“Take The Kids For Free is the biggest change we have ever made in our offer to customers, but now is the right time to welcome a new generation to Metro, and make it easy and simple to travel on clean, green public transport. I hope this helps make Metro part of everyday life for kids for many years to come and brings families back to our town and city centres, and our leisure attractions.”

Cllr Carl Johnson, Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside and chair of the Tyne and Wear Sub-Committee of the Joint Transport Committee, said: “It really is great news that children will be able to travel for free on Metro and the Shields Ferry.

“There are so many brilliant places in the local area to get out and visit over the summer holidays which are accessible by public transport, and this is a fantastic initiative to make it easier for families to enjoy them.”
