Network Rail has almost completed work on a project to replace Manton Bridge which was more than 150 years old.
A new and stronger bridge, which weighs in at around 425 tonnes, was installed last month as part of a £2.8 million project which will see that both passenger and freight services can continue to run safely and reliably for years to come.
The A6003 in Rutland links Oakham and Uppingham and has been closed since the 12th of April 2021 whilst work was underway installing the bridge as part of this major project.
The road re-opened on Sunday the 4th of July 2021 with the project finishing earlier than expected.
Network Rail are grateful for the support of residents and businesses within the community as their patience meant that the important project could be carried out safely.
The last part of the project will involve more brick and stonework and is expected to take until the end of July 2021 before the work site is cleared.
During this time, traffic lights will be put in place and will be operating for a further two weeks.
Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail's East Midlands route, said: “Our teams have made major progress on the project to upgrade Manton bridge and we're pleased to reopen the A6003 slightly earlier than planned.
“We want to thank drivers, as well as residents and businesses in the community, for their continued patience over the last three months. This vital work could only be carried out safely whilst the road was closed.
“We're now continuing with the final stages of the project so that people can use the road and railway safely for future generations.”
