MAJOR DISRUPTION: York and Leeds trains disrupted after engineering train derails at Church Fenton

Trains are being disrupted this morning after a train derailed at Church Fenton in the early hours of this morning.

Nobody has been hurt in the incident, but five wagons derailed around 2 am this morning and means trains between Church Fenton and Micklefield cannot run, affecting trains between York and Leeds.

Trains may be cancelled, delayed or diverted whilst the train is re-railed.

Engineers are on-site to inspect damage caused by the incident and get passenger services back on track.

The engineering train was delivering new rail to the area, but before the train can be removed from the area, Rail Accident Investigation Branch inspectors will need to examine the scene.

Network Rail says that there is currently no cause of the incident.

Northern, LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express services are all affected by this incident, with delays expected until the end of service.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail's North and East Route, said: “I apologise for the disruption passengers are experiencing today as a result of the derailed engineering train at Church Fenton.

“Our teams have been on site since the early hours of the morning and we are working as quickly as we can to safely remove the train, inspect and repair the infrastructure, and get passenger services back to normal. I am grateful for passengers' patience and advise those who need to travel today to check before they do so.”
