has released an update on the construction of new build British Railways (BR) Standard Class 6 No.72010 “Clan Hengist” at CTL Seal based in Sheffield.

The group have recently been assisting the team at CTL Seal at adjusting the fit between the smokebox saddle and frames. This comes after the group noticed the fit could be improved, a task easier to carry out at this stage of building “Hengist”.

Removing the smokebox saddle using an overhead crane, the surfaces of both the smokebox saddle and frame were checked. On examination, high spots were detected on both components, meaning they did not fit fully together.

After altering all high spots found, the long task of having to lift out and bolt up the smokebox saddle numerous times to check whether all the high spots had been ground back far enough began. This job has been completed, with the group now happy with the new fit.

A time-lapse of the process can be found below:

The next task to be completed on 72010 is fitting of the buffer beam with hot rivets to the rear frame extensions.
