Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has announced that New Southgate Station now benefits from a new cycle parking building, with the LED lights powered by solar panels.
GTR, the parent company for both Great Northern and Thameslink, are currently carrying out a network-wide improvement scheme of the stations they serve and maintain.
Listening to passengers feedback and recommendations, the decision was made to construct a facility to house passenger's bikes.
Hopefully, this improvement will promote more commuters to cycle to the station, a sustainable and eco-friendly way to travel. The new shelter provides covered parking for 18 bikes across two levels of racks.
On the roof, a solar panel generates electricity to power LED lighting for the building, increasing safety and security.
The land around the new shelter will soon be landscaped and planted up to improve the appearance for commuters.
Managing Director for Great Northern and Thameslink Tom Moran said: “We're making our stations more sustainable and a better experience for our passengers. We've given cyclists using New Southgate's new bike shelter the light they need in an environmentally friendly way that doesn't increase the station's electricity use.”
