The Ongar Railway has announced the arrival of a British Railways (BR) Mark 1 coach to increase their existing stock.

May 2021 has seen a variety of assets previously belonging to the PLC auctioned off.

Included in the items listed up for bidding was a BR MK 1 carriage, open coach No.4947 in ‘Carmine and Cream' livery.

Already owning three coaches in the same colour and looking to expand their set, the placed a bid for the carriage.

Following the acceptance of their bid, transport was organised, with Monday 24th of May 2021 seeing the newly purchased coach arrive at North Weald Station, Epping Ongar Railway.

Staff and volunteers have assessed the condition of the coach to see if any work is required, with only minor issues noticed which can be corrected in the coming weeks.

The addition of this coach will form a set of four ‘Carmine and Cream' for the Railway, allowing the capacity for some events to be increased to enable more people to take a trip along the line.

This will benefit upcoming events such as:

  1. Peppa Pig and George
  2. Mothers Day Dining Trains
  3. PAW Patrol

The Llangollen Railway Trust are hoping to reopen the line later this year.

  • Well I must say… it’s great to see that a carriage previously on a fellow Heritage Railway (in Wales), has found a new (and hopefully rightful) home on another fellow Heritage Railway, of whom is indeed… the Epping & Ongar Railway (in Essex).

The EOR, of whom I creatively describe as, Evocatively Outstanding, must be ever so proud to play a role in saving the Llangollen (& Corwen) Railway, by taking on one the latter’s now former passenger carriages, to Roam the Rails through the Evocatively Scenic Essex Countryside.

Let’s Hope the EOR warmly welcomes what was once one of the Llangollen (& Corwen) Railway’s Carriages, of whom has now become one of theirs, to fill the void in passenger numbers within Preservation.
