Two historic postcards of the North Bay Railway in have been found as well as a Golden Jubilee booklet which was published 40 years ago.

The find comes after the recent takeover of the North Bay Railway by the owners of the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

The old postcards show off the scenes of pre-war holidaymakers enjoying a ride on the minature railway, and were found by Mike Swift from Huddersfield who is the former secretary of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society as well as a founding shareholder of the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway, which now runs in the Skegness Water Leisure Park.

Mike prompted the owners of the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, John Kerr and Peter Bryant, to look for old photographs of the LCLR after their ‘lockdown tidy up' found unpublished photos of the CCLR before it closed in 1985.

Railway supporters searched files and boxes and unseen photos of both railways were found.

Prompted by the response of their publication, Mike Swift found two postcards in his collection and these have been copied and sent to the new owners of the line. The booklet, first published in 1981 by Scarborough Borough Council, who were at the time the owners of the railway.

However, it is thought that there may be many more unseen photos of all three railways, in particular, old family photos in photo albums.

If you have any photos, copies or originals, they can be emailed to Chris Bates via email or posted to

  • I am very pleased to have discovered this railway through this article. I am also pleased that the water chute is still operating. The last time a rode a water chute was at Wicksteed Park in Kettering in the 1950s. I don’t think it was as long as the Scarborough one. I want to visit the North Bay Railway asap.

  • Wow, the Scarborough North Bay Railway, of whom are 90 years old… Must be Ever so Lucky, to find, & Rediscover such A Historically interesting Vintage Postcard, and one-time Golden Jubilee Edition of, and about the SNBR itself (from 1981).

It’s also Jolly Great to Learn that the North Bay Railway (in Scarborough) still has A well-secured Bright & Colorful Future Ahead… Especially as it’s now also being run, by those of whom also own and run the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

One thing, both Yorkshire’s Scarborough North Bay Railway… & Lincolnshire’s Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, have in common… They’re both located on the East Coast, and 15-inch gauge in size… and serve their Respecitve Seaside Towns of where they’re Located Respectively.
