Freight operator DB cargo has been successful in their bid to create a new ‘Customs Approval Area’ in Barking, London at their intermodal freight terminal.
An award has been made from the Government’s multi-million pound Port Infrastructure Fund.
The £470,000 awarded means that work will begin shortly on the new border control facility.
Following the end of the Brexit transition period, the site will help speed up the movement of freight in and out of the country.
A new warehouse will be constructed where containers can be unloaded and inspected by Border Control staff.
Offices and facilities for HMRC staff will be included in the project along with a new secure storage area for confiscated and seized goods.
CEO Andrea Rossi said: “Barking is already a key staging post between the UK and Europe and plays an important role in the import and export of materials, consumer goods and produce for use both home and abroad.
“Every week train-loads of refrigerated containers from Spain pass through the terminal en-route to supermarket shelves up and down the country.
“This latest investment will ensure Barking continues to play a significant role in the seamless transportation of goods to and from Europe,” he added.
