Today the first trains return to Kirkby railway station, just a week after an incident involving a Merseyrail unit.

Last week saw a Class 37 diesel locomotive come and re-rail the unit, 507006, and since the train left, engineers have been working hard to return the station to a usable state for trains to return.

Additionally, earlier than planned, have been able to resume services to the station, with the 06:04 Wigan Wallgate to Kirkby being the first Northern train to arrive at the repaired station.

A spokesperson for Merseyrail said: ““We are pleased to confirm that the repair work carried out by Network Rail has been completed at Kirkby Station and that Merseyrail services will resume on Monday 22 March.”

Passengers are being reminded to only use train services for essential travel only, full details for Merseyrail trains can be found on the Merseyrail website.

  • Do pardon slight spelling error, I meant.
When it ought to be, is what I meant to say in-between the line upon my latest Message.

    • William, the Merseyrail line is third rail electric and the Northern Rail line is diesel only operation. Ormskirk has the same head on buffer stop arrangement. Experiments and development of battery operated trains continues and at some point in the future it is expected that the two lines will indeed meet again and allow battery operated through traffic.

  • Ah that’s good news… It’s great that repairs have been done (carried out) to get services back on track, same time as heeling the wound from that unexpected train collision accident.

Also, I wonder how come that kirkby train station, is devided, as a termins station for two seperate lines, whe nit oght to be rebuilt as a through station, to reconnect the two lines, I ask myself.
