have published their Early February 2021 update on new build London and North Eastern Railway B17 Class No.61673 “Spirit of Sandringham”.

‘Bottom-end'

The Hornblocks for 61673 has been successfully cast at William Cook Cast Products in Sheffield, with machining work due to take place soon. Next on the list for manufacture is the coupled axlebox and cannon boxes, which thanks to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, the patterns used for “Tornado” will be used in making these parts for “Spirit of Sandringham”.

Cylinders

Computed Aided Design (CAD) is being used to design all three-cylinder blocks. By using CAD, the team can produce a design which is not only cost-effective but also one which is stronger than originally fitted to the class.

Leaf Springs

Based in Rotherham, Owen Springs Ltd has been assessing revised drawings for the leaf springs to be fitted to 61673.
