The has released its 2021 plans for LNER A1 No. 60163 ‘Tornado'.

The Trust announced the plans at their virtual Annual Convention.

The 2021 Tour Programme will see around 25 tours operated, starting earlier in February 2021, with tours planned for a variety places, with help from both Tornado Railtours and also The Railway Touring Company, as well as “SRPS Railtours amongst others”, according to Graeme Bunker-James, Commercial Director at The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.

The Aberdonian tour will remain at the Trust's core, with also additional duties in Scotland likely to be announced.

Graeme also said that the trust arent clear on tours and work after September 2021 due to Tornado's overhaul, which is approaching, as they want to be ready for 2022.

New for 2021, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has been working on new tours. Valentines Day tours will visit Blyth and Tyne, as well as an evening tour from York to Harrogate.

In March 2021, Tornado will make its first-ever tour to Hull, which Tornado hasn't been able to visit due to a bridge which needed repairs. Tweaks will be made to The Aberdonian, which will see Tornado running from Glasgow in April 2021.

As a highlight for 2021, Tornado and Flying Scotsman will work trains over the Settle and Carlisle line together in September.

Two days of trains will operate on the 16th and 18th September, with both Flying Scotsman and Tornado operating on the same days. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust says that this is a “one-off”, with it being a costly operation to achieve.

Four trains will operate on the Settle and Carlisle Line, with one locomotive hauling trains each way.

Tickets for all 2021 tours will go on sale the 1st October 2020.

  • Please contact me when tickets go on sale for the settle to Carlisle trips and how to purchase them, this would be a dream come true.thank you

  • Why not have Tornado in BR/ Brunswick Green after 2022 – for the foreseeable future. This colour is far more popular and pleasing to the eye than the somewhat insipid ,faded looking Apple Green.
After all A1 s were actually in BR/ brunswiick green for 90% of their lives !!.Also enhancing is the BR crest etc on the tender rather than the loud ,large, stark ‘BRITISH RAILWAYS’ lettering . When one thinks about all this there should not be any
    A1 Trust member since 1995

    • Anthony, you clearly don’t come from Doncaster or you wouldn’t describe Apple Green as “Insipid” Think my preference would be the Express passenger blue, a striking colour and not seen very often.

      • Alistair I get your point but the overriding issue/ argument has to be the plain fact that A1s were in BR green for 90% of their lives & this is how they were remembered by the vast majority old boy !.
Line 100 persons up and apple green would be one of the least popular shades of green.
Why have a colour that was only on the engines for a year or so!- crazy.

        • Anthony, I accept your 90% statement of course. Doncaster has very little to show for its railway history right back back to GNR days. It’s just nice to see Apple Green out on the mainline, …maybe we should go for something like Improved Engine Green ! Regards. Alistair

          • On the contrary Alistair Doncaster has plenty to show & be proud of – the most famous steam engines in the world no less !! ++ no argument .
W hen one visits the actual office of Sir Nigel in the ‘plant’ it makes the hair on my neck stand up – he was indeed the greatest of them all – infinetly more flair & vision than his competitors.
