Major milestone reached in construction of steam locomotive 72010 Hengist

has confirmed that a major milestone has been reached in the project to build 72010 Hengist.

On the 11th September, the frames for the steam locomotive were moved from the assembly shop to the machine shop at CTL Seal in Sheffield.

This step will now allow for the frames to be set up on a machining station where the hornguides will be machined and follows on from the completion of riveting work on the frames by Varley Boilers in August.

The moving of the frames marks another month of progress at The Clan Project, which also saw orders being placed for the bogie cannon box casting pattern, and two pony or trailing truck wheels.

The Clan Project has also assisted The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust as they start their move from the Llangollen Railway to CTL Seal, which will see 61673 Spirit of Sandringham be built alongside Hengist.

Geoff Turner, Engineering Director of THE ‘CLAN' PROJECT, said: “We're all delighted to see the frames being successfully moved into the machine shop. I'd like to thank Varley Boilers for their work on the riveting of the frames, and our partners CTL Seal for their ongoing hard work and support in helping us complete the 1000th British Railways Standard locomotive.”

“I'd also like to welcome the B17 Steam Locomotive Trust to CTL Seal. This move further strengthens the collaborative relationship between the two projects, and we're all looking forward to working closely with them in the years ahead as our locomotives are Made in Sheffield.”
