A milestone has been reached by Network Rail in the £5.8m project to upgrade Crawley station which will include new lifts, ramps and a new footbridge.
The existing footbridge has been removed as part of the project, which is due to be completed in Autumn 2020.
The new bridge will improve accessibility at Crawley station and will reduce the time it takes passengers to get from Platform 2 to the main station and to Crawley shopping centre.
The work is all part of the Department for Transport Access for All programme.
With the new lifts installed on both platforms, more passengers can travel to Crawley town centre instead of travelling to Three Bridges.
Shaun King, Sussex route director for Network Rail, said: “Step-free access at Crawley will benefit passengers who use the station and we're really pleased to reach this milestone in the project. The new and improved bridge will benefit people in the area for future generations.”
Angie Doll, Managing Director for Southern and Gatwick Express, said: “On behalf of our Crawley passengers, especially those for whom the lack of lifts made the station difficult or impossible to use, we welcome this milestone on the way to making it step-free from street to platform.
“While we still ask people to consider whether they really need to travel, we thank those who do need to use Crawley station for their patience while this major investment is carried out, and we continue to work with Network Rail to minimise the inconvenience.”

Whoopie Doo Crawley railway station getting a new footbridge with lifts. All because of GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) wants to make their stations step-free accessible across their Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern network.
Whilst other train operators including Greater Anglia can’t be bothered to improve their railway stations (except improvement works at Ipswich).
And yes Marks Tey needs a new footbridge with lifts making it step-free accessible. Same with other stations including Hatfield Peveral, Ingatestone, Wickford, Rayleigh, Hockley, Rochford and Prittlewell.
Marks Tey railway station in Marks Tey, Essex could do with a new footbridge+lifts. As it’s a small interchange station where the Gainsborough Line goes to Sudbury and the Great Eastern Main Line goes through the station. Since Marks Tey station has had a refurbishment.
With most trains serving the station to & from London Liverpool Street, Colchester (including Colchester Town), Norwich (apart from intercity trains), Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, Harwich Town, Walton-on-the-Naze and between Marks Tey-Sudbury that the Gainsborough Line isn’t electrified but Class 755 Bi-mode Flirt units are being used.
