Repair work continues to stabilise an embankment located near St Catherine's Tunnel in Guildford.
Since the landslip in December 2019, Network Rail has been trying to resolve the issue and ensure another slip doesn't occur and endanger the nearby railway track.
Examination of the affected area showed heavy rainfall was the main reason for the slip.
To strengthen the embankment Network Rail's team will drill holes, insert steel nails and finally reinforce by cement. Once this is completed, netting will be fixed across the site and ground reseeded, to hopefully stop anything from falling on the track and promote vegetation to regrow. There will also be an extension to the wall around the entrance of the tunnel to stabilise the ground.
Unfortunately for passengers and nearby residents, there will be some disruption and noise, the most extensive being reduced services from Guildford on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of August to allow the team to work on the wall.
Network Rail Wessex Route Director Mark Killick said: “I want to say sorry to local residents for the disruption that has been caused. This has been a complex job following a landslip, and the team have worked incredibly hard in challenging circumstances. Engineers will continue until November, and we will try to keep disruption to a minimum.”
