West Coast Main Line rail passengers urged to plan ahead with Bank Holiday upgrades taking place

Passengers who need to travel via the West Coast Main Line this Bank Holiday Weekend are being urged to check before travelling as major upgrade work takes place.

Work over the weekend includes:

  • A junction at Euxton, near , will be replaced.
  • Improvements to the track at , , , and Preston will take place.
  • A signalling gantry will be installed at Preston
  • A 1960s railway flyover at will be partially removed
  • A footbridge will be replaced in Stockport

Tim Shoveller, managing director for 's North West & Central region, said: “The schemes we are carrying out over the weekends in May are all must-do work. We have planned it so as to minimise disruption to freight and those who do need to travel. It will help to ensure the railway is at its best when Britain emerges from this coronavirus pandemic. Our mission-critical frontline colleagues, including railway upgrade engineers, signallers, maintenance, control room and operations staff, are Britain's hidden heroes, helping to keep Britain connected in this time of need. And I'm proud of them.”

Passengers should follow Government guidance regarding social distancing and guidelines on how to use public transport. ​

  • At least the Kilsby Tunnel major upgrade works has been completed. As the Kilsby Tunnel is located between Kilsby and Crick in Northamptonshire near to the Warwickshire county border.
