Cambridge North Station has recently past its third birthday since opening back in 2017.
Sunday 21th May 2017 saw the official opening of the brand new Cambridge North Station funded by the Department for Transport, bring a much-needed rail link for the nearby Cambridge Business Park, located Northeast of Cambridge.
Key dates in the station's history are:
- Wednesday 18th of December 2013 – Plans for station approved by Cambridge City Council
- July 2014 – Construction work started.
- December 2015 – Planned opening date (delays due to work being halted and changes made to approved plans
- Sunday 21th of May 2017 – Opened to the public
Today both Great Northern (Govia Thameslink Railway) and Greater Anglia operate trains from Cambridge North into key stations such as London King's Cross, London Liverpool Street, Norwich and Stansted Airport.
The station has good facilities, including 1,000 bike parking spaces and solar panels to provide some of the station's electricity.
Passenger numbers have grown by over 300,000 between the first and second year of operation, showing the benefits the station has brought to the local area and its passengers.
Greater Anglia's Managing Director, Jamie Burles, said “When we opened the station in 2017 it was warmly welcomed by those who would benefit from the extra rail services and improved links it offered to London, Stansted Airport and beyond. We couldn't predict that three years later, we would find ourselves in the current situation, but I am confident that, once we are through this, the station will continue to thrive and Greater Anglia will still be here for you – with a fleet of fantastic brand new trains that will improve rail journeys from Cambridge North even further.”

Correction! There is some short term parking, I found it adjacent to the building site opposite the station buildings. It’s announced by a small red sign amidst the signage clutter of the sites hoardings, and is not really noticeable outside daylight.
A charmless moonscape of a station. There’s no short term parking although an abundance of unused disabled spaces. The platforms are remote from the station building. Using the place is an unattractive prospect.

Anyways happy birthday Cambridge North. Such a great ideal railway station to the north of the city centre.
It was once going to be named as “Chesterton” before it was decided to be named as Cambridge North to serve Cambridge Science Park nearby. But what a beautiful railway station. Happy Birthday Cambridge North. Plus there are plans to build a 3rd railway station that will be located south of Cambridge City Centre and to serve Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Cambridge Biomedical Campus that will be known as Cambridge South.
