Storm Ciara – storm to bring rail disruption across the UK

As we head for the weekend, train travel is expected to be disrupted as a result of Storm Ciara heading over the UK.

Yellow weather warnings for strong winds (60-80mph) have been announced for Saturday evening in the north, and also on Sunday across the whole of the UK.

In addition to the strong winds, heavy rain is also expected across the country.

Strong winds can blow debris or trees on to the railway, causing overhead power line damage or other track damage. This then delays trains until the line is cleared.

Also, Network Rail may need to introduce speed restrictions for safety reasons on some lines, this will slow trains down and may extend your journey.

No planned changes to train services have been announced yet, but please check your journey before travelling as delays might become apparent throughout the weekend.

What did the officials say?

Transport for Wales Operations Director Martyn Brennan and Chris Pearce, Head of Operations, Network Rail Wales and Borders said:

“With Storm Ciara set to bring gale force winds of up to 90mph on Sunday, Transport for Wales and Network Rail wish to urge all customers to check their journeys prior to travel.

“We're expecting very stormy conditions, high tides and winds that have the potential to uproot trees and damage infrastructure.

“The safety of our customers and colleagues is our absolute priority and as such there are likely to be a number of speed restrictions in place around our network, while some other lines may be forced to close entirely. We are working closely together to minimise any disruption and will do all we can to keep our customers moving and informed.”
