Northern has announced that it has now refurbished more than 50 per cent of its trains. The news comes as launched its 123rd refurbished train into service.

The Class 170 train went into service in the West Yorkshire area and now has a new livery, refreshed seating, and new lighting, as well as free Wi-Fi and at-seat power.

Northern's existing fleet of 243 trains is in the process of being fully upgraded to not only include this first phase of cosmetic refurbishment, but also an additional level of digital improvements.

It joins the following refurbished trains which are already out and about on Northern's network, giving passengers a better experience:

  • 37 Class 150s
  • 5 Class 155s
  • 30 Class 156s
  • 10 Class 158s
  • 8 Class 170s
  • 32 Class 319s
  • 1 Class 333
What did the officials say?

Ben Ackroyd, Northern's Engineering Director, said:

“The refurbishment of our trains is a massive programme of work and a huge investment for Northern – to reach a milestone of 50 per cent is great news.

“We are committed to improving our customers' on-board experience and the refurbishment programme is really gathering pace. Future work on the refurbishment programme will see the introduction of free customer Wi-Fi, at seat power and customer information media screens on all our trains.”

  • Whoopy do……still a crap company. Full of lies. Dont care about their staff or the passengers just a bunch of money grabbing thieves!!

  • I think it’s all lies ..my northern train is swimming in water ALL over the floor .stinks of damp
Who makes these things up !!

  • With the rest of the Class 333s to be refurbished. Will Northern inherit the Class 323s from West Midlands Trains or Class 332s from Heathrow Express. Despite the Class 195s and Class 331s will be introduced in service very soon. As Class 332s on Heathrow Express will be replaced by the modified Class 387s that 12 of the Class 387s used on GWR are to be modified to operate to Heathrow Airport direct service from December this year.

    • Also I thought that Northern were going to have 16 Class 170s being cascaded from Scotrail. As 8 of the Class 170s are now in service on the Leeds-Harrogate-York service.
